What’s the difference between cold applied crack filling and hot pour crack filling & sealing?

Cold applied crack filling is a popular option when it comes to parking lots and driveways. Epic Pavement’s cold applied crack fillers consist of clay-filled asphalt emulsion liquids, which flow into cracks at ambient temperatures. This is a cost-effective way of filling or sealing your asphalt. Cold pour sealant fills cracks seamlessly and

, asphalt surfaces must be prepped and cleaned using commercial blowers and sweeping equipment to remove and loose dirt. After cleaning, crack and pothole repair will take place. Pavement sealers are than applied using a high-pressure spray system, with some areas such as walkways applied with the traditional squeegee method.

Once applied, sealcoat must undergo one-three day curing period before vehicles can be allowed back on the surface. Depending on the size of the lot, sealcoating processes can be completed within a day or two.

Hot pour crack filling is typically used on roads, highways, and bigger parking lots. It involves a heating process that takes place in an oil-jacketed melter. Heated up blocks of rubberized asphalt are applied to cracks in parking lots and roads to create a seal. Set times are very fast and once the area is cool, it’s safe to drive on. As with cold applied crack filling however, a one-two, or even a three day curing period is suggested before the use of this space.

When is the best time to contact Epic Pavement about your asphalt sealcoating or crack filling project?

The sooner, the better! While we have filled and sealed cracks of numerous sizes, the best time to address the issue is when the crack is still small. Crack filling inhibits crack growth and keeps new cracks from forming.

Left unfilled, cracks will allow rain, and snow to flow through pavement and erode base materials ultimately resulting in potholes and damage to pavement. Filling cracks with crack filler helps prevent rain, snow, and moisture from flowing through the pavement and causing this kind of erosion. By stopping the entrance of water, the rate of deterioration of the pavement is significantly slowed and your pavement will have a much longer lifespan.

Ultimately, spring through late summer or early Fall tend to be the best times of year to get your sealcoating and crack filling done in order to avoid the unpredictable winters of year’s past.
